Subterranean termites

Subterranean termites are social insects that live in underground colonies and are known for their ability to cause extensive damage to wooden structures. Here’s some information aboutsubterranean termites: a deep and thorough clean.

  1. Habitat: Subterranean termites build their nests in the soil, typically near a reliable moisture source. They construct intricate tunnel systems called mud tubes to access above-ground food sources while remaining hidden from predators.

  2. Diet: These termites primarily feed on cellulose, which is found in wood and plant materials. They can infest and damage structures such as buildings, fences, and even trees.

  3. Colony Structure: A subterranean termite colony consists of different castes, each with specific roles. The reproductive caste includes the queen and king, responsible for reproduction. The worker termites perform tasks such as foraging, nest maintenance, and feeding the other members. Soldiers have large mandibles to defend the colony against threats.

  4. Behavior: Subterranean termites are highly organized and cooperative. They communicate through chemical signals known as pheromones. The workers travel back and forth between the colony and food sources, leaving a scent trail for others to follow.

  5. Damage: Subterranean termites create galleries within wooden structures, weakening their integrity over time. Infestations can go unnoticed for a long period as they usually work from the inside out. Signs of an infestation may include discarded wings, mud tubes along walls or foundations, and sagging floors or hollow-sounding wood.

  6. Prevention and Control: To prevent subterranean termite infestations, it’s important to address moisture issues around your property, ensure proper drainage, and remove any wood-to-soil contact. Regular inspections by professionals can help detect early signs of termite activity. If an infestation occurs, treatment options typically involve the use of insecticides or baiting systems designed to eliminate the colony.

It’s worth noting that while this information provides a general overview, specific details about subterranean termites may vary depending on the region and species involved.
