Rodents are a group of small mammals that belong to the order Rodentia. They are characterized by their continuously growing incisor teeth, which they use for gnawing on various materials. Rodents are found all over the world, except in Antarctica.
Some common examples of rodents include mice, rats, squirrels, beavers, and guinea pigs. These animals vary in size and habitat but share similar characteristics such as sharp incisors, a fur-covered body, and the ability to reproduce rapidly.
Rodents play important roles in ecosystems. While some species can be considered pests when they invade human dwellings or cause damage to crops, others have positive impacts. For example, rodents serve as prey for many predators, helping to maintain the balance of certain ecosystems. Additionally, some rodents like beavers contribute to ecosystem engineering by building dams and creating wetland habitats.
In terms of their behavior, rodents exhibit diverse feeding habits ranging from herbivorous (eating plants) to omnivorous (eating both plants and animals). They have adapted to various environments, including forests, grasslands, deserts, and even urban areas.
Many rodents have been studied extensively due to their relevance in scientific research. Mice, for instance, are commonly used as model organisms in genetic and biomedical studies because their genetic makeup is similar to humans.
